Khanjira & Mridangam Artiste (Indian Percussionist)
‘The Brand Ambassador of Khanjira’ Sri Amrit Nataraj (a.k.a. Bangalore Amrit) is one of the most respected Khanjira Artistes of the world of music. He is a leading & top ranking Khanjira & Mridangam Masters of the world. He is considered as one of the greatest exponents of Khanjira in the current era. He is an inspiration to many musicians across the world. Sri Amrit has been a huge influence in the Music World. He has motivated musicians, veterans & contemporaries likewise. He has inspired a lot of youngsters to take up the Khanjira.
Sri Amrit is the son of Virtuoso Violinist ’Dhanurveena Kesari’ ‘Karnataka Kalashri’ Vidwan Sri BASAVANAGUDI G. NATARAJ & Smt. N. LAKSHMI.
Sri Amrit started learning Vocal at the age of 3 at home. He started learning Mridangam at the age of 5 from ‘Mridanga Vaadana Rathna’ ‘Kanataka Kalashri’ Vidwan Sri M. VASUDEVA RAO. Later on, continued having advanced training in Mridangam from ‘Sangeetha Kalarathna’ ‘Kanataka Kalashri’ Vidwan Sri A. V. ANAND.
Sri Amrit had the great fortune of learning Khanjira from “Khanjira Legend” Mahavidwan Late Sri G. HARISHANKAR {Chennai}. Sri Amrit is the worthy successor to the throne of his Guru Sri G. Harishankar upholding the tradition of Khanjira playing & taking forward his Guru’s Legacy to greater heights.
Sri Amrit also has learnt Violin from his father Late Vidwan Sri BASAVANAGUDI G.NATARAJ & elder sister Smt. Sunitha Ramabhadran. He has performed Violin in many concerts too.
Sri Amrit is the only artiste to have been awarded with the 'TOP GRADE' in both Khanjira & Mridangam from the All India Radio, Prasar Bharati, Govt. of India. He is one of the very few artistes to have been awarded Top Grades in Two different Categories. He is also the youngest Khanjira Artist to be awarded with the “A - TOP GRADE” from the ALL INDIA RADIO.
Sri Amrit started performing at the age of 7. Since then, he has been performing with Top artists of the world in India and abroad for 40 years. He has been giving performances in ALL India Radio, National TV, and many other TV channels. He has featured in many National & International Music Festivals, Symphony orchestras, Percussion Ensembles, Jugal Bandhi s, Fusion Concerts, Audio CDs, Cassettes, Movies & TV Serials. He has composed, conducted & directed many music, percussion and fusion projects.
Sri Amrit has the rare distinction of being one of the very few **Khanjira Solo Artistes** of the world. Apart from performing & collaborating with Legends of Indian Classical Music & World Music for almost 4 decades, Amrit has been performing Khanjira Solo Concerts for the past 20 years & made an unique position for himself. Sri Amrit has collaborated with international stars like Pandith Jasraj, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Pandith Anindo Chaterjee, Mr. Louiz Banks, Pandith Vishwamohan Bhatt, Ustad Rashid Khan, Mr. A. Sri Amrit is the head of a Percussion group ‘LAYA- NAADAAMRIT’ which, through the INDIAN COUNSIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS {I.C.C.R.} GOVT. OF INDIA, was invited to Mexico to perform in the prestigious CERVANTINO festival in 2011.
As a SOLO ARTISTE
Sri Amrit is one of the main forces in bringing the Khanjira to the ‘Centre stage’ as a SOLO Instrument. He has many Khanjira Solo concerts to his credit. He has been conducting & performing many Percussion Ensembles & Fusion shows with Khanjira as the lead instrument for almost two decades now. He has created a unique space for Khanjira Solos through his series of 'KHANJIRAMRIT' Solo Concerts & other innovative concepts. Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra as a member of ‘Sruthi Laya’ in 2010\. Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ with world renowned musicians in the “GLOBAL SAI SYMPHONY” in 2015, to commemorate the 90th Birth anniversary of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Sri Amrit & performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in Mekudeshet Sacred Music Festival Jerusalem in 2016\. Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in ‘Sai Symphony’ by the WUPPERTAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at The Historiche Stadthalle, Germany in May 2017\.Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in Sai Symphony by the SHANXI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at Taiyuan, Shanxi Province in North China in November 2017.
Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in the first ever Special Percussion Trio concert at the DARBAR FESTIVAL 2017 (UNITED KINGDOM). Sri Amrit led & performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in ‘PERCUSSION DISCUSSION’ \- a Special Percussion Concert at AMMAN, JORDAN organized by Shoman Foundation 2018\. Sri Amrit performed as a ‘SOLO ARTISTE’ in the Jerash Festival Jordan 2019\. Sri Amrit made a ‘Special Appearance’ in the song ‘Elay Makka’ for Coke Studio Tamil Season 2, directed by Girishh Gopalakrishnan Sri Amrit has released a Solo album named “KhanjirAmrit” which is mainly oriented on highlighting the scope, strength, beauty & other nuances of Khanjira as a Solo instrument.As a GURU
Sri Amrit has been teaching Khanjira, Mridangam, Konnakol & various aspects of Indian Classical Rhythm & Music to many students all around the world. Thus spreading the rich culture & heritage far & wide & passing them on to the next generations. Many of his students are performing in concerts from several years. There are many of them who have secured ‘A’, ‘B High’ & ‘B’ Grade from the All India Radio. Apart from that, there are many foreign students from places like USA, UK, Europe, Australia, Israel, Jordan, Malaysia, Thailand & many more, have learnt & are learning from Sri Amrit offline & online.COURSES
Sri Amrit has released an instructional educational DVD in 2007 called “Khanjira \- The journey within…” which is a very useful guide for learners to practice the traditional classical authentic method of Khanjira playing. The DVD got huge popularity receiving great acclaim amongst performers & learners worldwide. Sri Amrit has also released an online Khanjira Course titled 'KHANJIRA... The Rhythm Chakra' for the benefit of the beginners. This course is uniquely crafted, teaching the special techniques of playing the Khanjira creating a lifetime opportunity to learn the authentic techniques of Khanjira, the Indian frame drum from Khanjira Legend Late Guru Vidwan Sri Harishankar's school of thought. The course is designed in such a way that anyone interested & passionate about music & rhythm can learn from it & benefit immensely from this treasure trove of lessons. Sri Amrit has conducted a Clinic on ‘MODERN KHANJIRA ART’ & gave a ‘Khanjira Solo’ performance in the PERCUSSIVE ARTS SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION \- PASIC 2007 in Columbus {Ohio, USA}. Sri Amrit has conducted many Workshops & Lecture Demonstrations for many prestigious institutions, which includes Berkley School of Music (BOSTON) & ARIZONA State University and more. Sri Amrit performed a Khanjira Demonstration \- Solo titled ‘Naada Chakra’ for the Bangalore International Centre in June 2011\.Sri Amrit’s Lecture demonstration on “Sri G. Harishankar’s Playing Techinques of Khanjira” was awarded the ‘Best Lecture Demonstration Prize’ by the Madras Music Academy in 2011.
Sri Amrit gave a Lecture demonstration on ‘The Evolution, Growth & Development of Deva Vadya Khanjira’ in the 52nd Anuual Music Conference of Bangalore Gayana Samja.

Sri Amrit is a recipient of the CCRT Scholarship for Khanjira from the Ministry of Human Resource & Development.
Sri Amrit is a recipient of Karnataka State Scholarship for consecutive 3 years.
Sri Amrit won the I Prize in the ALL INDIA RADIO National Level Competition for Khanjira
Sri Amrit has also won the II Prize in the ALL INDIA RADIO National Level Competition for Mridangam.
Sri Amrit has won the I Prize for Mridangam, in the National Level Competition conducted by South Central Cultural Zone (Nagpur), in the year 1996.

Vidwan Sri Amrit.N stands as a bastion of Indian Percussion upholding the tradition, classicism & authenticity of the art of Khanjira playing, which otherwise is a less privileged art form. He is contributing enormously towards placing Khanjira as a unique individual instrument in the mainstream of International & World Music, spreading the art extensively & passing it on to the next generations.
AS A MULTI-PERCUSSIONIST
Sri Amrit can handle many percussion instruments other than Mridangam & Khanjira.
In his younger days, Amrit has played Ghatam in a few concerts.
Amrit has played Morching in several concerts.
Amrit has recited Konnakkol in many concerts.
Amrit was a self-taught Tabla Player. He regularly played Tabla in his School & College. He was a part of the Group song team which won many prizes in many completions in School, District & State level. He also provided percussion support to the School Dance Group again winning many prizes in School, District & State level.
Amrit has a huge fascination for Thavil. He is a self-taught Thavil player. He played Thavil for many years in several concerts of ’Laya Surabhi’ Ensemble directed by his Guru Sri M. Vasudeva Rao Sir. He also played Thavil in many other concerts, ensembles & fusion concerts.
Amrit also liked playing on Chande a lot. Again self-taught, he played Chande for some percussion ensemble concerts & Dramas.
Amrit performed a very special concert called ‘ASHTA VADYA’ in 1998 at The State level Seminar of AKBMS where he showcased 8 percussion art forms – Mridanga, Khanjira, Ghata, Morching, Tabla, Chande, Konnkol & Thavil on one stage.
Amrit also used to play the Dholak in college days for Group Songs & Dramas quite often.
Amrit has played Dholki in ’Laya Surabhi’ Ensemble directed by his Guru Sri M. Vasudeva Rao Sir. He palyed Dholki in his maiden TV appearance in Doordarshan, National Televison Channel of Govt. of India for a Violin Ensemble directed by his father Vidwan Sri Basavanagudi G. Nataraj in the year 1985.
Amrit also tried his hand on Thamate, a regional folk Instrument of Karnataka. He played Thamate for Nandi Kolu Kunitha , a traditional Folk Dance of Karnataka, in the District level Inter College Competition.
Amrit has played Pakhawaj in some musical projects & Audio productions
Amrit has played the Cajon, Djembe & some other hand drums.
AS A VIOLINIST
Sri Amrit also has learnt Violin from his father Late Vidwan Sri BASAVANAGUDI G.NATARAJ & elder sister Smt. Sunitha Ramabhadran. He has performed Violin in many concerts on Violin. He has played Violin Duets with his sister. He has also played Violin Trios with his Father& Sister.
Amrit, along with his sister Smt. Sunitha, has lead many Pancha Pitilu Vaadana (Penta Violin Performances) & Multi Violin performances directed & conducted by his Father Vidwan Sri Basavanagudi G.Nataraj.
Amrit has performed Violin in the special children’s programme of Bala Jagath Children’s programme for the (All India Radio, Bangalore) which was recorded (Broadcasted) & performed in front of live Audience in Bangalore Town Hall.
Amrit used to regularly assist his father in teaching Violin to students right from a very young age.
Amrit is also a self-taught Harmonium & Keyboard player. He has played Keyboard for some events in school & college.
AS A SINGER
Amrit started learning Carnatic Vocal from his father at the age of 3.
He sung in many competitions & won prizes too. He had to discontinue Vocal due to cold & throat issues in his childhood. He later took part in some competitions & events in his college days. He also coordinated the group song teams in his College.
He guides many Vocalists about the nuances of music & presentation.
AS A COMPOSER
Amrit is also a composer. He has composed Musical pieces & rhythmic structures for various projects. He has composed the opening & finale pieces for many percussion ensembles.
Amrit has composed a set of Sanskrit verses in praise of his Guru Sri G. Harishankar commemorating his 60th birthday.
Amrit composed the title music & background score for ‘VEDA SUDHA - An introduction to Vedic Sciences’ animated interactive CD by the National Institute of Vedic Sciences.
Amrit has composed musical bits for re-recording used in television serials.
AS A CREATOR
Sri Amrit conceived & conceptualized the idea of creating a Audio-visual Software that could show Taala on a computer screen, an idea way ahead of its time. He shared this idea with his longtime friend & collaborator Sri Kishor Srivathsa who was very much interested in this idea & started developing this software through his company ‘Shree Technologies’. After a lot of research & hard work, Kishor was able to bring this idea into life. The First Version was called ‘Bramha Laya’ that was released in 2001.
Then, they came up with an upgraded version called ‘Sunaada Laya’ and released it in 2004 on the hands of ‘Padmabhushan’ ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ Legendary Sri T. V. Gopalakrishnan, in a grand event at The Bangalore Gayana Samaja.
AS A MULTI-FACETED ARTIST
Amrit ventured into many other streams of Art other than Music.
Amrit has taken part in Fancy Dress & Mono acting in his school days. He won several prizes in Fancy Dress & Mono acting competitions in his school days. He is also quite good in Mimicry.
Amrit created content, wrote script & directed some Skits & Mad-Ads. Those won prizes in Intercollegiate Competitions.
AS A THEATRE PERSON
Amrit was very active in the theatre group in his college days.
Amrit was a regular in the music team & also was usually ‘Student in-charge’ of the music pit. He played a main role in up lighting of the Dramas through his rhythms increasing the impact & intensity and enhancing the outcome of the Drama.
Amrit played the Tabla & gave background rhythm for a Musical Play called ‘Kerege Haara’, which was adjudged the best play in the intersection Drama Competition of National College, Basavanagaudi and was specially staged again in Dr. H. N. Kalakshetra (National College, Jayanagar) for public by ‘Padmabhushana’ Dr. H Narasimhaiah (President of National Education Society).
Amrit scored the title music & background score for T.P Kailasam’s play “Gandaskatri’, when he was in PUC.
Amrit provided the rhythm score to plays like ‘Halagali Beadara Dange’, directed by Sri Kote Ananth & Sri Poorna Chandra Tejasvi (popular Actor & Director).
AS A DIRECTOR: Amrit has directed two Dramas Anweshakaru & Anukolakkobbanna & co-directed another drama for the Intersection competitions in National College Basavanagudi.
AS AN ACTOR: Amrit acted in some dramas as well.
Amrit was adjudged the ‘Umesh Rudra Best Actor Award’ for his impressive performance of a poet & social thinker in the play ‘Raavi Nadi Dandeyali…’ (Directed by Sri Malatesh Badiger) in the State level Inter collegiate Drama competition jointly organized by Bharath Yatra Kendra, Karnataka State Nataka Academy & Gnaanabharathi (Bangalore University).
Amrit’s role of ‘RaJa Divodaasa’ from the play ‘Maadhavi’ was a big hit & hugely appreciated for the acting, comedy, timing & his body language.
Amrit played the pivotal role of a Head-constable in the drama ‘Anweshakaru’ (which he directed too), received a lot of praise.
Amrit’s cameo in T. P. Kailasam’s very famous play “Anukoolakkobbanna..”(which he directed too) was a smash hit. Padmabhushana Dr. H Narasimhaiah (President of National Education Society) highly appreciated that role very much.
Amrit was a founder member of a Theatre & Cultural group called ‘Samyuktha’, created by his college friends.
AS A NSS Member
Amrit was a n active member of the National Service Scheme (NSS), a central sector scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt. of India to promote community service.
Amrit participated in several camps organized focusing on social service, literacy, health, environment & rural development..
